Be all you can be!

“A high quality mathematics education provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject” DFE

At Twickenham Primary School, we use White Rose Maths Small Steps scheme throughout the school. This gives our children the opportunity to learn not only the conceptual understanding required in mathematics, but also the necessary methods to build on for later life. A variety of methods are employed by all teachers so that all children are engaged and interested in maths. These include practical learning, video tuition, book work and verbal discussion.

Mathematics in EYFS involves providing our children with opportunities to develop and improve their skills in understanding and using numbers, calculating addition and subtraction problems and to describe shapes, space and measures.

The delivery of this is through carefully planned adult led activities to introduce new skills and learning and through purposeful, planned independent opportunities where adults observe and intervene with higher order questioning and engagement to extend the learning that is taking place.

During Key Stage One, the principal focus of our mathematical teaching is to ensure that all our pupils further develop their confidence and mental fluency with whole numbers, counting and place value.  Pupils are also encouraged to further develop their understanding of shapes, space and measures using the related mathematical vocabulary accurately.

During Key Stage Two these skills are built upon.  We place a great emphasis on number and times tables and then support children to use these skills to solve a variety of problems.

Maths Journeys

Our aim at Twickenham Primary School is to equip all pupils with the skills and confidence to solve a range of problems through fluency with numbers and mathematical reasoning. Children are encouraged to see the mathematics that surrounds them every day and enjoy developing vital life skills in this subject.

By using the White Rose curriculum as a starting point, (linked to the 2014 National Curriculum) children expand their understanding through exploration, problem solving, discussion and practical experience. White Rose primary maths resources are designed to instil a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts using a full range of fun, inspiring classroom activities. All essential topics in Key Stage 1 and 2 are covered including times tables, the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division), basic decimals and fractions, percentages, number system use and more.

A key aspect of teaching throughout the school involves the use of practical apparatus to promote understanding of mathematical processes and ideas. Carefully planned activities encourage children to work mentally, observe patterns, make predictions and discuss relationships. Mathematics skills are also used in other subjects such as science, ICT and art.

In Reception and Key Stage 1, we are using the NCETM’s Mastery in Number project to support pupils to develop good number sense. This project aims to secure firm foundations in the development of the understanding of numbers, symbols, meanings, and vocabulary for all children from Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2. The aim over time is that children will leave KS1 with fluency in calculation and confidence and flexibility with numbers. Attention will be given to key knowledge and understanding needed in Reception classes, and progression through KS1 to support success in the future.

Recognising the valuable contribution parents make to children’s success in mathematics, we offer a range of support to enable them to enjoy the subject and have the confidence to help their children including Inspire workshops and Google classroom activities.
